Stated to be a poor follow up by everyone I knew had seen it, I finally watched out of interest to find out as to how bad? Answer, not bad at all!ĭirected and screenplay by the team responsible for the prior Damon trio of films, this is more a parallel movie with skilful cross references to where the last Damon film left off than a follow on sequel. Also, I always think that Renner looks a bit like Daniel Craig, Weisz's husband, so maybe that's another reason why the two to me look just right together on screen! Renner looks more the stereotypical action hero ex-commando than the Matt Damon Bourne, and Weisz is very much the equal co-star.
It's a tried and tested plotline to make us really want the pair to escape and fall in love, but it works well with Renner and Weisz.
I think it's this relationship that makes this Bourne movie different. He has to enlist the help of Dr Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), a scientist on the programme, now herself under threat, and the two go on a journey together, their relationship becoming closer as this thriller develops. The storyline in this Bourne movie is more straightforward than in the original three, because the focus is on Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), evading elimination from the secret programme in which he is an "asset", and his quest to source the "meds" he needs to maintain his enhanced capabilities.
